When I asked why I was also given a "Western" name, my Father explained that we only used our traditional names when among those who would understand them. These names are pre-determined and have been passed down for many generations in accordance with a calendar kept in our family temple in Malaysia. my generation of my clan are all named after celestial bodies, my Fathers generation were named after great rivers, and my sons generation is named after trees.
